Our work – Education
5 out of 200 million children in India between 6 and 14 years don’t attend school. Instead, many of these children work with minimum salary and they can’t break the poverty they have been born into. Education is necessary in order to escape poverty. Reading, counting and writing are needed to get a job and be able to provide for themselves and their family.
IndianChildren run their own school in Kolkata and support sponsor children in three more schools. Together these four schools comprehend preschool to 12th grade (6-18 years).
In Pakur, 6 hours train ride north of Kolkata, IndianChildren support dormitories for both boys and girls. 248 children live in the dormitories, that are situated near the school.
Many of the poorest children don’t have the opportunity to attend a regular school. In order to teach them how to read, count and write, IndianChildren run 7 street schools for approximately 150 children. Our goal is that as many of them as possible will be able to continue to a regular school.
